DryMet® and Stainless Steel Banding: A Bespoke Solution
According to the Royal Society of Chemistry, silicon is the second-most abundant element on planet Earth after oxygen. It is therefore not surprising that we have found countless industrial and commercial uses for the material, which is found in everything from mobile phones to car batteries.
When a major silicon plant required a unique stainless steel banding solution to facilitate a new, state-of-the-art recycling plant, its representatives approached BS Stainless to provide it.
The plant is located in Norway, more than 1,000km from the capital city of Oslo and 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Responsible for producing vast amounts of silicon, the plant one of the largest in the world and is also renowned for being extremely energy-efficient. The proposal to build a new waste recycling plant was made to further enhance the plant's environmentally-aware qualities.
The plant's location is close to the sea and this fact, coupled with the extremely low temperatures and exposure to corrosive chemicals produced by the plant, meant that the risk of galvanic corrosion between stainless steel banding and cladding was especially high, with pollutants easily being trapped between the components.
These factors prevented the use of standard stainless steel banding. Working closely together, the experienced team at BS Stainless designed a solution that involved applying our unique DryMet® moisture barrier to banding components. DryMet® is used extensively to prevent galvanic corrosion on stainless steel sheet and our team were confident that the principle would remain the same if the barrier were applied to stainless steel banding.
The theory was quickly put into practice and worked just as expected. After the components were thoroughly tested, they were supplied to the plant where installation was then able to take place rapidly. Our team were rightfully proud of the innovative combination and the way in which it successfully met the complex demands of this unique application.
