Focus on Aluminium Coil
As you can almost certainly gather from the name of our company, BS Stainless primarily supplies and processes stainless steel products. But did you know that we also work with a range of other metals? One of these metals is aluminium. In this edition of our blog, we showcase one of our bestselling products: aluminium coils.
Aluminium (known as 'aluminum' in American English), is a chemical element with an atomic number of 13 and the abbreviation 'Al' on the periodic table. In its raw form, it is a soft, silvery and ductile metal that is non-magnetic. Like stainless steel, it has an affinity to oxygen and thus forms an oxide layer on its surface when exposed to air, giving it a good resistance to corrosion. It is markedly less dense than many other metals: its density is around one-third that of steel.
At BS Stainless, we have invested in dedicated, state-of-the-art coil processing lines which, in addition to being used to process stainless steel coil, are also ideal for processing coil made from aluminium. As standard, our aluminium coils are 1,000mm wide and weigh between one and two tonnes, with thicknesses ranging from 0.4mm to 1.2mm.
We can also supply smaller aluminium coils which, often referred to as 'insulation coils', have a width of between 1,000mm and 1,250mm, thicknesses of between 0.3mm and 2.0mm. Though we produce these coils in weights of 125kg and 150kg, these are generally produced according to exact client specifications. Insulation coils are especially versatile and are thus used for numerous applications including coating ducts, pipes and boilers.
We offer aluminium coil in a full range of H14 grades including 1050, 3003, 3005 and 3105: other tempers and alloys are also available. The coils can be supplied with a mill or stucco finish. Such a large range of alloys can provide the perfect combinations of corrosion-resistance, toughness, formability and the mechanical properties necessary to resist thermal or mechanical abuse when in service.
With exceptional supply routes, BS Stainless is usually able to supply aluminium coil immediately: if an order is particularly large and we do not have enough stock then this can be quickly sourced. We strive to ensure that every client is able to purchase coil suited to their particular processing capabilities and offer a range of added processing options such as painting or laminating, along with cutting the coil into sheets or precision-slitting it into narrower coils.
Other options include processing the coil into corrugated sheets with various profiles available. Where aluminium coil is to be used for metal jacketing purposes, it can be supplied with a full range of factory-laminated coatings including Tedlar®, Surlyn™ and mass-loaded vinyl.
