New Stainless Steel Sculptures Unveiled

In the previous edition of the BS Stainless blog, we revealed that a stainless steel sculpture of a horse was chosen as the winner of a new reality TV show on the BBC called 'Home Is Where The Art Is'. We continue with the theme in this article, which looks at some brand new stainless steel sculptures that have recently been unveiled, hitting headlines around the world.

Infinite Accumulation: Yayoi Kusama
Primarily known for her evocative dot paintings, Yayoi Kusama became the world's highest earning artist last year, with combined sales from her works reaching a staggering total of US $80.9 million (around £61.4 billion). Her latest work, Infinite Accumulation, was recently unveiled outside Liverpool Street, the busiest railway station in the UK.

Infinite Accumulation sees Kusama returning to her use of stainless steel as an artistic medium; the new work echoes her previous Narcissus Garden which, exhibited in 1966, comprises no less than 1,500 highly reflective stainless steel balls. Her new sculpture, which stands at 10 metres in height, is composed of numerous stainless steel spheres supported by a framework of curvilinear lines. The work was funded by the City of London Corporation and British Land as part of the Crossrail Art Foundation's public art programme.

Kinetic Tree: Travis Seeger
Travis Seeger hails from Austin, Texas in the USA. A talented metal sculptor, he specialises in designing sculptures of trees which have outer branches made from mild steel and canopies formed using stainless steel ball chains. His latest creation, recently unveiled at Mount Vernon in New York and described as 'captivating', incorporates more than two miles of stainless steel chains.

The strong yet delicate qualities of the chain allow the 'tree' to be always in motion, responding to every gust of wind. Commenting on his decision to use stainless steel, Seeger mentioned the material's 'unmatched quality and consistency' which 'adds a dynamic element that enhances the overall aesthetic'.

Reflector: Jyhling Lee
Queen Street West, a busy thoroughfare in Toronto, Canada, is now home to Reflector, a new stainless steel sculpture conceived and created by local artist Jyhling Lee. Based on an origami bowl, the impressive piece measures five by three metres.

To create her piece, which forms a semicircle and connects with the ground on spiked points, Lee brought together a series of angled planes which she then clad in stainless steel polished to a mirror finish. She chose the material as much for its practical qualities as for its delightful aesthetic, mentioning that it would be strongly resistant to corrosion and also easy to keep clean.
