Stainless Steel in application
March 2010 saw the demolition of the Myllysilta Bridge, located in the city centre of Turku concerns were raised when the bridge actually started to sag. A competition was announced where designers could present potential designs for a new bridge and then once the winner was selected the design would be set into motion and ultimately construction would begin.
WSP won this design competition, their design was said to have been the most suited to the urban environment. Most interesting to us here at BS Stainless was that the bridge is going to have a modern cladding placed on it and this is going to be made from stainless steel.
It is this stainless steel cladding which will give the bridge a modern and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The Myllysilta Bridge will stretch a total of 99 meters and will be an 20 meters wide, with the Bridge being this big it is important that the supporting structures are adequate.
WSP stated that when they entered the design competition they knew that appearance would play a key role however, looks aside the bridge needed to be durable and hold a lengthy life cycle. Stainless Steel was therefore chosen because of its strength, durability and also that with minimal maintenance the metal will still keep its shiny appearance due to Stainless Steel’s amazing ability to avoid corrosion.
This is just another example of how Stainless Steel is changing the construction industry. It has become a popular choice for many, with its low maintenance, durability, strength and long life cycle it is perfectly suited for construction where aesthetic appearance is important.
