What is Temper Rolled Stainless Steel Coil?
One of the things that makes stainless steel such a popular material for so many different applications is its versatility. After the material has been produced, there are numerous processes that it can be subjected to in order to change its inherent properties, further enhancing how versatile it is. Among these processes is that of temper rolling. In this edition of our blog, we're going to look in more detail at the temper rolling process and the effects that it has on stainless steel.
Temper rolling is a process of work-hardening. Unlike many other such processes, temper rolling does not involve using heat and is instead carried out at room temperature. When stainless steel is temper rolled, the crystalline structure of the material is altered at the microscopic scale.
A temper mill is used to carry out the process. The mill includes a number of elements such as a mill stand, an uncoiler, rollers and a recoiler. A stainless steel coil is automatically unrolled and fed into the machine, where it is passed between work rolls that apply strong pressure to the material. After being pressed to the correct dimensions, the finished stainless steel passes out of the machine and is recoiled as it does so.
The primary reason for temper rolling stainless steel is to increase its yield strength to a carefully-defined tolerance. There are also marked improvements in the shape, surface finish and flatness of the material, along with notable decreases in coil memory and ductility. Temper rolling allows for consistent repeatability and an exceptionally high level of thickness accuracy.
Temper rolled stainless steel coil is used across the spectrum of industry from medical, IT and automotive to petrochemical, construction, insulation and spring markets.
At BS Stainless, we supply temper rolled coil in many different grades. Though the most popular is 301, we also offer a full range of additional grades including 430, 316L, 316, 304L, 304 and others. We make the material to order in the VPN/HV range; the most common are TR230, TR280, TR330, TR380 and TR430 though we can provide alternative ranges according to customer requirements.
In addition to coils, we can also provide temper rolled stainless steel as precision-cut blanks. All options can be slit to exactly meet specific thicknesses and widths with either deburred or slit edges.
Whatever your temper rolled stainless steel coil needs are, BS Stainless can meet them. Find out more on our website or by getting in touch with our expert technical team.
